Dataverse → Fabric Migration
Migrating Dataverse Reporting to Microsoft Fabric
Dynamics 365 CRM client, migrating to Microsoft Fabric
72 reports migrated · 100+ hours saved
The Challenge
The client's Power BI reports were built directly on Dataverse — covering core CRM entities like accounts, contacts, and system users. As the organisation moved to Microsoft Fabric, they needed those reports repointed to a Fabric warehouse without disrupting reporting continuity or trust in the numbers during the switch.
The Approach
- Landing & staging layer: a Dataflow Gen2 landed and staged every required Dataverse table — accounts, contacts, system users, and related entities.
- Fabric warehouse: a warehouse was created in Fabric and linked to the dataflows, populated on a repeatable, automated basis.
- Report repointing: legacy reports were reconnected using purpose-written SQL against the new warehouse tables, replacing the original Dataverse connections.
- Validation & UAT: every repointed report was validated independently, then published to a dedicated test environment for formal sign-off before release.
- Go-live: reports were published to a live workspace and packaged into a Power BI App for end-user consumption.
The Outcome
- 72 reports migrated from Dataverse to Fabric across multiple workspaces and a consumption App over a 10-month period.
- No loss of reporting continuity — existing reports kept working exactly as users expected, now running on a modern, scalable warehouse architecture.
- Operational and support reports built during the migration — opportunity status tracking, credit note checks, ownership checks, exception reports — saved the business over 100 hours of manual checking work.
